Wow! Eco Tips?! You thought I was going to tell you to stop using plastic, right? Well, yes! But not yet.
Our first tip costs no money and takes very little effort, however it is the most crucial change you can make.
What a time to be alive! We live in this awe-inspiring world of technology, social networking and endless information. We’re more informed now than ever before and we’re constantly connected to the world. But, with all this connection and information, how is it that we have become such an ignorant, self-serving society?
The fact is everyone lives in their own bubble and it’s easy to forget that the world we see, is not all that there is to see. We demand things that make life in our bubble easier and more convenient… and we want these things to be cheap, so that we can buy more… things! But how many ‘things’ do we actually need?
The more society delivers, the more we demand. We have an insatiable appetite for consumerism and we rarely step outside of our bubble to understand the true cost of our demands. The cost that comes at our planet’s expense, rather than our own.
We don’t think about the soil that is desecrated, the water and air that is polluted, the mistreatment suffered by animals… and by people. The damage to the ecosystem, wildlife, our health… our future. All that happens outside of our bubble. Ignorance is bliss, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to be ignorant about climate change.
We all have access to a world of information, yet so many of us are still so uneducated with regard to the environment and how we are affecting it.
Why?
It’s simple:
Because the answers make us feel uncomfortable.
Because change seems too difficult.
Because the problem seems too huge.
I’ve been there too! The task seemed so overwhelming that I turned away from it (for a time) because… what could one person possibly do to make a difference?!
Then I had a child.
As any parent knows, as soon as you have a child, your world changes. Suddenly, it’s not all about you anymore, in fact, it’s almost entirely about them. You realise you’ve brought this amazing, special and beautiful human into a world that has an expiry date! That is when I started to develop a Conscious Living Mindset.
I consider Conscious Living to be a holistic approach to life, relationships and the environment. It’s about being a life-long learner, about striving to understand and accept others, and about monitoring your own actions and being accountable for them. In general, it’s about being a better form of human.
Notice I haven’t mentioned anything about ‘going green’ yet?!
Conscious Living is stepping outside of yourself and understanding that you are part of a network, and everything is connected. Just like a spider web, if you tug on one line, everything moves a little, be it in a positive or negative way. While small actions may seem insignificant at the time, they actually affect everything and everyone around us. Your actions naturally influence others to make changes. Over time, small actions become bigger actions and they are multiplied by millions of people… and THIS means a big deal to the planet.
So, congratulations! You’re in the right place. Once you start dissolving ignorance through education, you’ll find change is the easiest thing in the world.
Strive to become the kind of human that you and your children are proud of.
